The Trenton Literacy Movement, Inc. Launches New Website
The Trenton Literacy Movement, Inc. (TTLM), a nonprofit established in 2016 with the mission of improving reading outcomes for children in Trenton, NJ, has launched a new website thetrentonliteracymovement.org
From compelling photos to color scheme to typeface, the new site highlights TTLM’s services and impact. Visitors can enjoy a user-friendly experience while learning more about the organization, up-to-date news, and how to contribute. Future plans for the site include links to reading resources such as a YouTube channel featuring a library of colorful children’s stories read by members of the Trenton Kappa Foundation and other community leaders and produced by C.e.excellence1@gmail.com of Trenton, New Jersey.
TTLM’s after-school literacy programs are in all 14 Trenton public elementary schools. Serving more than 400 students each year, it is made up of a blended learning model consisting of teacher-assisted instruction along with computer-based Lexia® https://lexiacore5.com reading tools that are research-proven to close the literacy gap.
“Because they lack reading skills, Trenton’s youngest students are behind the learning eight ball and many may never catch up,” said Douglas H. Palmer, TTLM Chairman and former Mayor of Trenton. “The Trenton Literacy Movement, Inc., seeks to put our youngsters on track to a better and more rewarding life.”
"We believe children first learn to read and then read to learn; you measure what you treasure; and what you measure gets done,” said Edward W. Bullock, TTLM President.
Over 75% of Trenton public school children read below grade level. Low literacy skills are a predictor of a lifetime of limited opportunities and a possible fast track to incarceration. Since its founding in 2016, TTLM has improved the reading scores of literally hundreds of students and positively impacted the community. Fifty-seven percent of students who started in the program below grade level, caught up to their reading level and 67% advanced at least one grade level.
