On a packed Senior Night inside Tornado Alley, Trenton High outlasted
Lawrence in a spirited CVC showdown. But the biggest victory of the evening wasn’t on the
scoreboard — it was in the hands of families and children who left the gym carrying 600 free
books and personalized TTLM tote bags, courtesy of The Trenton Literacy Movement (TTLM).
The atmosphere courtside was “lit” with the presence of Douglas H. Palmer, former Mayor of
Trenton, and Chairman of the TTLM Board, who was delighted to return to Tornado Alley and
reconnect with longtime friends. He was joined by TTLM’s own dynamic “front court”: Ed
Bullock, President; Gloria Jean Tunstall, Vice President; Sandra Estrada; and Deserie Hill, all
dedicated board members committed to advancing literacy across the city.
Supporting this effort was a strong team from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Trenton Alumni
Chapter — Keith Wallace, DeQuincy McRae, and Corey McNair — who brought their
trademark energy and service to the event.
“We decided that a full-court press was needed to ensure that our kids have the resources they
need to achieve. A home library is a great first step,” said Chairman Doug Palmer.
TTLM President Ed Bullock, author of Warren Goes to Grandpa’s, added:
“Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop reminds us that books are a mirror, a window, and a sliding glass door
— a pathway for young readers to step into new worlds with new imaginations.”
This full-court press was powered by a generous donation of 1,000 books from TTLM’s newest
partner, Our Kids Read, led by CEO Jahmal Lake. TTLM will distribute the remaining 400
books at literacy events throughout Mercer County in the coming weeks.
